ETF and Index Funds Winter 2013 Quarterly Report

Investor Economics’ ETF and Index Funds Report provides extensive coverage of the fast‐growing exchange‐traded fund (ETF) segment, and  tracks the progress of index mutual and segregated funds. Our ETF research monitors the segment from a number of vantage points, including asset class, underlying investment and investment  strategy. In addition, the analytical views of the index fund segment involve tracking the mutual funds that “wrap” ETFs, a recently introduced  sub‐category of index funds that make ETFs available to a wider audience of advisors who operate with an MFDA license and, consequently,  have no direct access to listed securities. An important part of our analysis is the distribution channel perspective. Data on the holdings of Canadian‐ and U.S.‐listed ETFs is collected  from a wide‐ranging sample of Canadian full‐service and online/discount brokerages as well as other distributors. Subscribers to the ETF and  Index Funds Report have access to this resource which goes well beyond what is published in the report. Another new addition to this report  is the tracking of both Canadian‐ and U.S.‐listed exchange‐traded notes (ETNs) held by Canadian retail investors.
