Deposit and Fixed Income Advisory Service Spring 2016

Against the backdrop of negative and volatile capital markets, deposit products regained ground in the second half of 2015 and early 2016. Balances in premium savings accounts (PSAs) and market-linked GICs (MLGICs) expanded solidly in the second half of last year. GICs experienced a rush of activity in 2015 as investors and advisors favored liquidity and safety; in late 2015, for the first time in more than two years, GIC balances experienced positive growth.

The pre-release edition of Investor Economics Deposit and Fixed Income Advisory Service (DFIAS) documents the key trends underpinning the development of the deposit industry in Canada. The report includes the main sections dealing with deposit products: the Deposit Market Overview, the Savings Accounts and the Fixed-term Deposits sections. Detailed information about activity in the CANNEX network is part of this edition of the Fixed-term Deposit section as well an in-depth analysis of the GIC book of business in advice-based channels and market-linked GICs.

The edition of the report that will be published later in April will include sections dealing with registered assets, the big picture (an overview of the entire playing field, including the forecast for deposit products), fixed income investment funds, market-linked notes, and deposit and fixed income assets at the provincial level.
