Managed Money Report - Fall 2010

This is the seventh edition of Investor Economics’ Managed Money Advisory Service report, which provides the most comprehensive coverage of the supply and demand sides of the managed money business in Canada. We have updated the data to June 30, 2010.

This edition builds on the success of past studies and includes a new feature on mandate turnover in the institutional managed money segment. This analysis tracks the trends in turnover—assets and accounts gained and lost—in all of the major asset classes. The analysis underscores the fundamental ‘takeaway’ nature of the money management business, and emphasizes the importance of managing client relationships as well as client assets. Even though the institutional segment of the market has not exhibited robust growth, it is evident that there is a considerable and continual flow of assets between managers. As is the case with the sub-advisory section, which first appeared in our Spring 2010 report, the turnover analysis will appear as an ongoing feature of our managed money research.

We have added several new firms to our database. In addition, there has been a change to the reporting of RBC Asset Management and Phillips, Hager & North. The two firms are now reported together as RBC Global Asset Management. The report also includes our annual update of profiles of several of the largest in-house pension managers.

The accuracy and value of the Managed Money Advisory Service report is partially dependant on the willingness of money managers to share their data with us, and to permit us to analyze and present the data in a manner that allows participants to monitor their business and the effectiveness of their business strategies. We thank those managers that participate in this initiative and welcome the participation of those firms that seek an accurate assessment of one of the most critical components of the Canadian financial services industry.
